    Microcourse information

This virtual microcourse – curated by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry’s Dr. Marianne Patinelli-Dubay – is an introduction to thinking about forest management through the lenses of rational and relational approaches. This microcourse will begin with a focus on applying rational thought to moral and ethical problems including the perennial tension between what we can do and what we should do, and how to transform a situation from what it is into what it ought to be.  As a counterpoint to this approach, we will take up an ethic of care to consider the impact of NRM decisions on the relational landscape of the situation including our own sympathies, responsibilities and loyalties as well as those of stakeholders and constituencies.

    Microcourse information

This virtual microcourse – curated by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry’s Dr. Marianne Patinelli-Dubay – is an introduction to thinking about forest management through the lenses of rights and the greatest good. Gifford Pinchot sets the stage stating Where conflicting interests must be reconciled, the question shall always be answered from the standpoint of the greatest good of the greatest number in the long run. In this microcourse you will dig into the hidden challenges within forestry’s primary directive including the sometimes-contested definition of what constitutes the good, how to think about harm, and exactly how long is the long-run?  In worksheets completed in your own time you will think through what is involved in recognizing the full and complex range of human and non-human values, time horizons and how to think through actions that cause harm or lead to a destabilized ecosystem.

Agroforestry practices may be both enjoyable and profitable for individuals that want to have a “hands on” approach in sustainable land management. This microcourse will give insight on utilizing land for multiple use purposes including row crop production, silvopasture, riparian zone protection, edible/medicinal plants, and mushroom production. A more in-depth coverage of silvopasture is also presented which includes site preparation methods, pros/cons of the silvopasture system, forage establishment, and other relative discussion points. This microcourse heavily focuses on the southeastern United States, but insights can be gained and applied across landscapes everywhere.

    Is this microcourse for you?

This microcourse is intended for foresters, natural resource professionals, or landowners interested in learning about the multiple facets that can be contained within an agroforestry system. Individuals that desire to know methodology for installation and the economics of related agroforestry practices will find this microcourse useful as well. The information presented will provide some guidelines for establishment of an agroforestry system and may also provide some insight which has not already been revealed to the audience. Regardless of the current land use or forestland type, agroforestry may be a more rewarding endeavor for the more intensive landowners.

    Webinar information

Assisted migration, which is the movement of genotypes, populations, species, or forests, has been extensively researched as an approach to minimize the expected negative impacts of climate change on the health, productivity, and ecosystem services of future forests. The local seed source may no longer be adapted or optimal to meet land management objectives, and this issue may be one of the most important challenges foresters will need to deal with in the coming years. Fortunately, many people study the issue and can provide tools to land managers to make the best choice under the available data. The two talks here are aimed at providing the why, the what, and the how of assisted migration to a general audience including current knowledge, implementation, and future plans for public lands. Before the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to discuss the available tools that can facilitate decision-making to ensure the resilience of their forests.

The webinar will be composed of two presentations, followed by a Q&A/discussion session. The speakers are Dr. Brian Palik (Forest Ecologist, US Forest Service, Northern Research Station) and Dr. Greg O’Neill (Forest Geneticist, British Columbia Forest Service, Canada)

This webinar is now available for archived viewing here through the SAF ForestEd platform.
