This course is designed to help foresters make the change from using Esri’s ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro. It has been newly remastered and updated for 2025.
Course information
The purpose of this class it to equip foresters and other natural resource professionals to make a successful transition from Esri’s ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro. This class differentiates itself from others because the content and exercises focuses purely on forestry related applications and skills. Upon completion, creating and sharing the best timber type maps, and more, will be done with confidence and skill.
This course has been newly updated for 2025. It contains remastered videos with content applicable to the current versions of ArcGIS Pro.
Is this course for you?
This course is intended for users of Esri's ArcMap who want to successfully transition to using it's replacement, ArcGIS Pro. This is for you if you are already familiar with GIS and Esri’s ArcMap at a basic license and skill level. Eligible course participants are to have ArcMap already installed and available (to migrate Personnel GDB to File GDB). Participants must have a computer that meets the system requirement of Esri’s ArcGIS Pro, must have a license to use Esri's ArcGIS Pro, and must have it installed. These are required to successfully complete this short course.

Course pace
This course is self-paced with an expected completion time of just over 7.5 hours. There are four sections, which are intended to be completed over the course of 4 weeks.
There will be an hour-long Live Guided Support Session on November 21, 2025 at 1:00 pm ET.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this short course, you will be able to:
1. Compare and contrast ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro.
2. Import existing ArcMap map projects (*.mxd) files into ArcGIS Pro.
3. Edit GIS layers in ArcGIS Pro.
4. Demonstrate the use of layouts and templates to create and share maps.
5. Migrate ArcMap workflows to ArcGIS Pro.
6. Implement a variety of additional ArcGIS Pro features.
Rubric
Successful completion of the course is measured by your ability to complete each component and passing the quiz at the end of each section. The passing score for the quiz is 100%. You have unlimited attempts to pass the quiz.
Course Evaluation
Participant feedback is appreciated to help the course curators and subject matter experts continually improve the course for future participants. Course evaluation must be completed to receive CFEs.
CFEs
Upon successful completion of this course, you will earn 7.5 CFEs in Category 1. CFEs will automatically be added to your CFE record located on www.eforester.org.
Certificate
Upon successful completion of this course and course evaluation, participants may download and print a certificate verifying completion of the course and earning CFEs. CFEs will be uploaded to participant CFE records by the end of the day (11:59 pm ET).

Bruce Ripley is currently the Chief Innovation Officer for the College of Natural Resources at the University of Idaho. Over the last 35 years he has worked in industrial forestry across the breadth of North America, from Northern New England to the Intermountain West, Pacific, South and Southeast. He has extensive experience in designing and managing forest information systems, as well as experience in forest planning, growth and yield, and financial analysis. More recently Bruce joined the University of Idaho to support its commitment to advance the science of forest innovation and high precision digital forestry leveraging LiDAR and other remote sensed data.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Intermountain Forestry Cooperative - University of Idaho
Edward Flathers holds a PhD in natural resources from the University of Idaho and is currently a Research Scientist specializing in remote sensing applications for forest measurement and monitoring. His work focuses on the use of LiDAR and related three-dimensional point cloud data to quantify forest structure, derive individual-tree attributes, and assess applications of spatial datasets across multiple sensing modalities. By combining geospatial computation, ecological insight, and reproducible software practices, his research contributes to the development of quantitative frameworks for digital forest monitoring and inventory.

In this webinar, hear from an urban forestry expert on how urban wood from natural disasters can be utilized for new purposes.

The field of disaster preparedness and response has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.
We have learned how to better coordinate our resources for emergency planning and response. We have even learned how to make our communities more resilient to future disasters. All the while, increasingly extreme events strike our nation every year.
However, often overlooked are key questions about our urban forests: What do such events mean for our urban tree canopy? How should we manage it before a disaster strikes? What should we do with the wood waste afterwards? And how can we turn the substantial nuisance costs of woody debris removal and disposal into savings?
In this webinar, presenters will discuss the latest trends and techniques local communities can use to transform downed trees into a valuable community asset. Additionally, the speakers will discuss how having a robust urban wood utilization plan in place before a disaster strikes can conserve a community's precious time and other resources in the aftermath.

Walter Passmore is the State Urban Forester for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). He is responsible for managing the Urban and Community Forestry Program which provides technical assistance, information, outreach, education, and administers grants. Walter held previous positions as Urban Forester for the cities of Palo Alto, California (2012-2021), Austin, Texas (2007-2012), Dallas, Texas (2006-2007), Community Assistance Forester and County Forester for the Mississippi Forestry Commission (1994-2006), and Forester with the USDA Forest Service (1989-1994). The excitement around engineered mass timber has hit a fever pitch in the U.S. green building community because CLT, glulams, and similar products have many attractive properties that more conventional materials like concrete and steel can’t match. One of the biggest attractions is a lower carbon footprint.
There’s no silver bullet for our carbon problems, though, and focus has zoomed over the last few years. People are still looking to optimize the role of working forests in carbon sequestration and storage, but many also want to ensure that forest health and resilience don’t fall by the wayside as they adopt these newer materials. So, architects, engineers, and contractors have teamed up with foresters, landowners, and NGOs to explore the broader idea of “climate-smart” forestry.
What does that mean, and where is it all headed?
