Facilitating Artificial Regeneration of Hemiparasitic ʻIliahi, Hawaiian Sandalwood (Santalum paniculatum)

Description: Santalum (sandalwood) species are ecologically distinct as evergreen, hemiparasitic trees. We studied reforestation with the endemic Santalum paniculatum (ʻiliahi) as part of a novel Hawaiian silvicultural system. Our results demonstrate that establishment and early growth of reforested ʻiliahi are affected by host species and planting distance.

Description: The native fungus, Verticillium nonalfalfae along with several other Verticillium species has been identified to kill the invasive Ailanthus altissima. Verticillium can be applied to a subset of Ailanthus stems, and through time, will spread naturally with minimal impact to native species.

Structural characteristics of black spruce infested with eastern spruce dwarf mistletoe, Minnesota, U.S.A.

Description: Eastern spruce dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum) is a native, morality-causing disturbance agent of black spruce (Picea marina) in Minnesota with strong spatial patterns to its occurrence. We found differences in pattern and magnitude of effects of infestation across spatial scales (stand, plot, neighborhood), highlighting the importance of scale to management.

Do Complex Spatial Patterns in Treated Stands Influence Tree Mortality from Bark Beetles?

Description: Recent silvicultural treatments in Northern Arizona create complex spatial patterns, leading to variable individual-tree competition within treated stands.
