Leadership Nature
Tom Davidson is a forester who found his way to working with people more than trees and numbers. After earning undergraduate degrees in Forestry and Agricultural Economics from N.C. State, he entered traditional forestry roles in industry, and earned an MBA and an MS in Organization Development before leaving the paper industry as vice president of human resources and organization development. After a merger in 1999, Tom founded Leadership Nature, particularly to help technical experts in natural resources be just as expert on the people side of their work, including leadership, communications, and teamwork. He is a past chair of the Appalachian SAF, an SAF Fellow, recipient of the W. D. Hagenstein Communicator Award, and approaches retirement in King William, Virginia, with his wife of 47 years, four border collies, and five horses.

My work at the Huntington Wildlife Forest, SUNY-ESF’s 15,000-acre research and demonstration forest, is dedicated to the design and delivery of a curriculum in ethics applied directly to forestry and natural resource management. Principally this includes Practical Ethics for Resource Managers, a required course for undergraduates along with a professional-level course in related topics for SAF’s ForestEd. A coursebook Practical Ethics: A Field Guide for Resource Managers is the result of a rich collaboration with field foresters and serves as a primary text for these courses.
I am immediate past Chair of New York SAF’s Adirondack Chapter, current Chair-Elect of New York SAF and an elected member of the Forest Stewards Guild Membership and Policy Committee. My husband and I own the prettiest working farm and forest in the Champlain Valley, along the border between Vermont and New York. Every aspect of my work-life is in service to an optimistic future for woodlands and the communities that they sustain.
