Tamara Cushing

Extension Forest Business & Economics Specialist

University of Florida

Dr. Tamara Cushing is an Extension Forest Business Specialist at the University of Florida.  Her expertise is in forest finance with an emphasis on taxation and succession planning and she works with private landowners and their advisors to provide information needed to make decisions related to forest management. Dr. Cushing holds a forestry degree from the University of Florida, two Master’s degrees – one in Forest Economics and one in Taxation from Mississippi State University, and a PhD from the University of Georgia in Forest Finance. Prior to joining UF in 2021, Dr. Cushing was on the faculty at Kentucky, Clemson and Oregon State and worked for F&W Forestry.  Dr. Cushing is an SAF Fellow and served as the 2020 SAF President.

Stuart Hale is the Forestry Program Manager for The Nature Conservancy’s US and Canada Carbon Markets Team and Co-Chair of the Forest Stewardship Council’s US Board of Directors, where he is also currently serving as Interim President. Stuart obtained his BS and MS degrees in Forestry from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with concentrations in Forest Resources Management and Forest Economics and Policy, respectively. He is a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Forest Stewards Guild

I have been an SAF member since 1992. I earned my BS in Forestry and an MS in Natural Resources from Cal-Poly Humboldt in 1995 and 1996 respectively. I have worked in both the land management and wood procurement areas of forestry. My career started on the West Coast but I have lived and worked in Eastern Tennessee for the past 18 years. I was the Tennessee Tree Farm chair from 2007 through 2008, the Tennessee SFI SIC Chair from 2014-2017, KT vice-chair in 2018, KT chair in 2019, KT policy chair for 2020, and the working group 6 sustainability and certification vice-chair in 2022. In my current role for the Forest Stewardship Council US, I assist the forest management certificate holders in the US.

Jason Metnick

Senior Vice President, Customer Affairs

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI)

Jason leads the standards pillar at SFI, with a focus on elevating the SFI standards as a proof point for sustainable forestry and responsible purchasing. His work advances the standards pillar through engaging and communicating the value of SFI’s standards to certified organizations, customers of SFI‑certified organizations, and others interested in the value of sustainable forestry. Jason has worked at SFI since 2001 and holds a Bachelor of Science in forestry from Northern Arizona University. He is a member of the Society of American Foresters and sits on a number of committees related to forest certification, chain of custody, and eco-labeling. He lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, two daughters, and Maple the wonder dog.
