Understanding Hardwood Log/Lumber Grades for Foresters: In the Field & at the Mill

Microcourse information

An individual hardwood tree’s value is determined by not only the species and volume, but also by log grade of individual logs. The amount of defect-free, clear wood within a particular log determines the grade. Typically, higher grade sawlogs, such as veneer and stave, will break a greater price per volume. Individual boards are graded by National Hardwood Lumber Association guidelines and then separated to be used for different commercial wood products. This microcourse will present a general overview of hardwood product classes, the US Forest Service process for grading standing timber, NHLA guidelines for grading lumber, discussion of internal and external log defects, sawn board defects, and pricing comparison between grades. This microcourse focuses primarily on species found in the southern and mid-Atlantic eastern states of the United States, but lessons can be applied across the US.
