Hear from three speakers on philosophical, historical, and cultural considerations for how we approach forest policy and management of mature and old-growth forests.
Technical session information
How do we define mature and old-growth forests? How do we place clear policy parameters around a system that is in a state of constant change and operates on cycles of decades or centuries? Is forest management a natural or unnatural phenomena, and how does our understanding of human history influence this question? We hear from three speakers on philosophical, historical, and cultural considerations for how we approach these questions and their influence on science and policy.

This presentation overviews an ecocultural state-of-knowledge report that brings together Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science to support climate and wildfire adaptation strategies for forest landscapes.
Technical session information
North American forests are experiencing unprecedented challenges due to extreme wildfires, pathogen and insect outbreaks, heat stress, drought, rapid development, and invasive species. Exacerbated by climate change, these threats collectively diminish cultural values, economic values, and habitat. Contemporary and historical management, including a long legacy of fire exclusion in many sites, are root causes of current forest conditions.
This presentation overviews an ecocultural state-of-knowledge report that brings together Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and Western Science (WS) to support climate and wildfire adaptation strategies for forest landscapes. This report builds on federal directives to respectfully and intentionally braid IK and WS knowledge systems in a Two-Eyed Seeing approach that informs climate- and wildfire-adaptation strategies to conserve our public forests.

These presentations seek to help us understand how to balance forest health and resilience with optimized carbon storage. They also present multiple narratives on forest carbon management as related to mature and old-growth forests.
Technical session information
Among their many benefits, forests present an invaluable resource for carbon sequestration and storage in our efforts to mitigate climate change. Notably, forest density and carbon stock accumulation can exacerbate threats to forest health and resilience, prompting a need to understand how we can balance forest health and resilience while optimizing for carbon storage.

In this session, we hear from experts representing their respective region to help us understand how we define, assess, and foster the conservation of old-growth forests.
Technical session information
In one of its initial efforts under the Mature and Old Growth Initiative, the USDA Forest Service identified over two hundred old-growth forest types across the US. Each forest type presents unique combinations of species, structural components, and associated threats, among many other variables. In this session, we hear from experts representing their respective region to help us understand how we define, assess, and foster the conservation of old-growth forests.
