This apparent paradox raises the question: do higher income levels imply increased or reduced demand for newsprint? That is, is there a newsprint Kuznet's curve? Regional Economic Impact of a Western North Carolina Pellet Millc

Open to view video. A regional economic impact analysis of a 10,500 ton/year pellet mill in western North Carolina was performed. Multiple scenarios were modelled with varying levels of impact constraints. Preliminary results indicate the mill would have a modest, measurable impact and compare favorably to forest-based sectors in metrics such as value added/output. Presented by Laurel Kays, NCSU

Impacts of BMPs on logging costs and productivity were assessed using a combination of work-study and survey methods. Results indicated a high variability of impacts of BMPs, but revealed significant differences between conventional and fully mechanized systems. Ultimately, stumpage and contract rates must reflect BMP requirements to maintain profitability.  Presented by Matthew Kelly, Michigan Technological University

A portable sawmill was located in the Black Forest to salvage burned timber and help cover removal costs. However, the factors affecting real-time GPS systems are poorly understood. We report results of evaluating GPS motion data and the time-to-signal accuracy of geofences under various levels of canopy cover, aspect, and positional dilution of precision.
