Fire Exclusion and the Demise of Shortleaf Pine: Lessons from Long-term Silvicultural Research
This paper synthesis almost 80 years of observations on the success of shortleaf pine in two studies on the Crossett Experimental Forest with fire exclusion as a key management objective. In both the uneven-aged and natural area compartments, shortleaf abundance has declined dramatically, suggesting the important role of fire.
