Follow the urban tree’s lifecycle from new tree planting to repurposing and a second life. Who are the various players, and what are their goals and challenges. The Urban Wood Network will host a panel of experts who work in the various lifecycle stages of an urban tree including, planting, care, removal, milling, design, product manufacturing, and marketing. Unique perspectives will be shared from each panelist as we seek answers on how we collaboratively work together to maximize the benefits of urban trees.

Learning objectives
Upon successful completion of this webinar, you will be able to:
1. Identify the goals of groups and agencies who plant urban trees.
2. Explain the priorities arborists have for care during a tree's life.
3. List criteria urban forest managers use to determine when a tree should be removed.
4. Recognize challenges and opportunities for urban wood professionals.
5. Identify how urban wood professionals can help each other move toward common goals.
Rubric
Successful completion of the webinar is measured by participating in the entire webinar and completing the evaluation. For on-demand viewing, completion requires passing the quiz with a score of 80%, as well.
Evaluation
Participant feedback is appreciated to help the presenters and webinar partner continually improve webinars for future programming.
CFEs
Upon successful completion of this webinar, you will earn 1.0 CFEs in Category 1. CFEs will automatically be added to your CFE record located on www.eforester.org by the end of the day (11:59 pm ET).
ISA certification holders can also earn CEUs. This program is approved by ISA for 1.0 CEUs in the following categories: Certified Arborist, Municipal Specialist, and BCMA Management.
SAF will report ISA CEU completions on a monthly basis for ISA CEU approved programs.
Certificate
Upon successful completion of this webinar and the evaluation, participants may download and print a certificate verifying completion of the webinar and earning SAF CFEs. A quiz will also need to be passed to access the evaluation following the on-demand viewing of the webinar. CFE certificates will only be available until February 15, 2025 at 12:00 am ET.

Jessica serves as the Executive Director of the Sacramento Tree Foundation. She has a doctorate from Rutgers University and is a certified Project Management Professional. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the International Society of Arboriculture, the steering committee for Green Communities Leadership Institute, and a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum - Mountain Valley Chapter. Jessica has a passion for the urban forest, and her research has focused on developing and enhancing current urban forestry practices in order to better manage the urban interface throughout its entire lifecycle.
Ben Rickenbacker
Forestry Operations Manager
City and County of Denver
Ben Rickenbacker is the Forestry Operations Manager for the City and County of Denver. Ben oversees the maintenance of 80,000+ trees throughout the city. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Western Kentucky University. He is an ISA Certified Arborist/ Municipal Specialist and maintains both the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) and Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualification (TPAQ). He has over 20 years of experience in the arboriculture industry working primarily in municipal forestry.
Brian Bishop
Owner
Bishop's Tree Service
Brian Bishop is an ISA Certified Arborist who owns Bishop's Tree Service, and has been in the Tree Care industry for over 40 years. He has been a member of Professional Tree Care Association (PTCA) for over 20 years, where he held several board positions, including 6 years as President. He has also been a long standing member of the Tree Care Industry Association. As a member of the Urban Forestry Advisory Council of Encinitas, he advises the city on wood recycling and overall urban tree management. He is notified when urban trees are removed, and facilitates the upcycling of cut trees.
Scott Altenhoff
Urban & Community Forestry Manager
Oregon Department of Forestry
Scott Altenhoff from Eugene, OR, is Program Manager for the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Team. Scott has a longstanding interest in helping people to better understand and appreciate the value of trees and urban forests, especially as they relate to human health and community wellbeing. Prior to joining ODF in 2022, Scott worked for 18 years as a municipal arborist and urban forester with the City of Eugene.

Kanami Otani is the Western Region Education Chair for the UWN. She believes collaboration is the key component in increasing urban wood utilization. Kanami is an urban forest planner working with communities to plan for the future of their urban forest.
