Exploring Cansiglio: 500 Years of Forestry in the Italian Prealps

image

Webinar information

In this webinar, participants will learn about the long history of forestry and sustainable forest management in the Cansiglio Forest—a forest in the northern-Italian Prealps. They will get to see and discuss a unique situation: 500 years of continuous forest management and how long-term sustainability can be achieved by scientific management. Participants will get a chance to learn about how forest management and forest science has changed over centuries with shifting technology, demands, and management paradigms, as well as the process of re-discovering 500 years of forest history and documents. They will learn about how current managers have responded to management challenges like expanding deer herds and loss of predators, climate change, and changes in what current users expect from the forest. Participants will gain a unique insight into historic forest management, how forestry is practiced in Italy, and discuss management challenges that have been faced by foresters across centuries and continents.
