Framework to Identify Effects of Forest Management for Wood-based Pellets on Biodiversity

We created a framework to derive pathways by which wood-pellet based forest practices such as thinning, removing downed woody debris, removal of standing dead trees, and clearcutting can affect species’ habitats or lifecycles. We applied our framework to the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus), a keystone species of special concern. Presented by Latha Baskaran, Oak Ridge National Laboratory .

Open to view video. Fire use is critical to managing western landscapes, however there are emerging alternatives to open burning that may be useful to forest managers. This talk will introduce the basics of pyrolysis and torrifaction as a means to reduce fuel loading in wildland and urban settings. Presented by Darren McAvoy, Utah State University.

Open to view video. This study shows that the profit from blueberry is significantly higher than loblolly pine in SE Georgia and more than 85% of land is suitable for blueberry production. This suggests that the existing forest landowners could convert their forestland to blueberry production affecting existing forest-based ecosystem services including timber production. Dry Forest Restoration Costs and Revenues: An Oregon Case Study

This presentation describes an implementation cost analysis for a recently proposed cohesive forest restoration strategy for 2.7 million acres of federal lands in the Rogue Basin of SW Oregon.  We describe projected costs, revenues, and local economic impacts of strategy implementation, as well as alternatives to improve economic performance. Assessing the Role of Wood Mills in Determining Supply of Forest-based Ecosystem Services in Georgia

Open to view video. This study ascertains the role of forest management drivers in determining the distribution of total carbon sequestered in southern pine stands in Georgia. After adjusting of spatial autocorrelation, we found that the sequestered forest carbon in pine stands increases with an increase in distance from pulp mills and sawmills. Economic Contribution Analysis of Forest Products Industries in Michigan

Open to view video. Economic contributions provide a snapshot of direct economic activity associated with given industries. Through a series of IMPLAN-based Michigan case studies, we show (1) linkages among different sectors of the forest products industries, (2) contributions of these industries at different spatial scales, and (3) how timber harvesting impacts the economy. Accuracy Assessment on Drone Measured Heights at Different Height Levels

Open to view video. A DJI Phantom drone was tested for height measurement at four different levels, 2, 5, 10, and 15 m along a height pole. The results revealed it measured height more accurately when it was landed before each measurement, while having the GPS on or off did not make any difference. Presented by I-Kuai Hung, Stephen F. Development of High Density LiDAR Derived Forest Inventory

Using cutting-edge technologies, a less expensive and highly robust inventory of the forest land base will be developed through a pilot study across a diverse ecological landscape with multiple ownerships in Minnesota. This pilot will assess methodology, accuracy, and costs, to evaluate the anticipated extension of this methodology statewide. Presented by Dennis Kepler, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Measuring and Monitoring Forest Structure and Biomass from Space

Post-2020 will witness a series of new observations from NASA and ESA spaceborne missions dedicated to measurements of aboveground forest structure and biomass (AGB).  These measurements are designed to providr globally consistent estimates of forest aboveground biomass and monitor disturbance and recovery of forests. Delineating Forested Wetlands and Crop Areas Using Synthetic Aperture Radar

Open to view video. For many years, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been used in research to identify forested wetlands and crop areas. The advantage of SAR over optical remote sensing techniques includes its it's all-weather observing capability. In the near future, quantifying forested wetlands and crop area will be demonstrated globally with NISAR. Presented by Josef Kellndorfer, Earth Big Data, LLC.

Open to view video. NASA’s Global Ecosystems Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a full waveform LiDAR system that is scheduled for launch to the International Space Station (ISS) in December, 2018. This presentation gives an overview of GEDI's mission concept and algorithms for producing maps of forest height and aboveground biomass.
